The Friends were set up in 1955 with the primary purpose of providing support to the patients and staff of the hospital, then owned by the National Health Service. The Friends are a registered charity (number: 258638)
Since the hospital building returned to community ownership in 1998 the Friends have risen to the challenge of providing the financial support the hospital now needs. In September 2000 the first hospital charity shop was opened in Hartley Wintney High Street and in July 2004 a second was opened in Odiham. These shops, together with regular successful events organised by the Friends, have provided a lifeline by which a very substantial contribution is made each year to the hospital to finance utilities, maintenance expenses, purchases of equipment and patient comforts.
Membership is open to all for an annual minimum subscription of £10. Whilst paying a subscription is of itself a welcome help, there is much more that members can do to get involved. For example: making donations using the Gift Aid scheme, being a collecting-box holder, assisting with major events organised by the League of Friends committee, serving teas at the hospital or looking after hospital flowers, using the charity shops and encouraging the donation of good quality items for sale at them.
